Generic Early 1970s Helmet Plaque

Early 1970s helmet plaque. The helmet style used is from the 1970-1981 seasons.    Roughly 22" by 22".

(photo from Chad Maun)

MPlaqueHelmetRound.jpg (100677 bytes)

Generic Mid-Late 1970s Helmet Plaque

Probably mid to late 1970s helmet plaque. The helmet style used is from the 1970-1981 seasons, but the helmet is slightly brighter white instead of a true cream shade. May have been produced later using a "throwback" helmet design.

(photo from Chad Maun)

1964 Season, 1965 Cotton Bowl

This is actually a University of Arkansas plaque commemorating the Razorbacks' season and matchup with the Huskers in the Jan 1, 1965 Cotton Bowl. Still makes a nice momento from that bowl game.

(photo from Bob Ihrig)

1965 Big 8 Champs

A sharp looking walnut plaque commemorating the Huskers' first undefeated regular season under Coach Bob Devaney.  The Huskers would go on to suffer a 28-39 defeat to Coach Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide, the eventual National Champions.

(originally submitted by Dave Auch of Omaha, updated photo from Dan Wagner)

MPlaqueTD_Club_Dye_AD.jpg (217597 bytes)

Touchdown Club Plaque - Tippy Dye

This is a plaque that would be given to members of the Touchdown Club, with years added for added membership.  This one belonged to a Mr. Hyde, and was given during the years that Tippy Dye, who hired Bob Devaney as Head Coach in 1962, was the Athletic Director.  Tippy remained AD until Bob Devaney himself took over the reigns of the Athletic Department in 1967.  Leather trim around a 6" square ceramic inset.

(photo and details courtesy Dan Wagner - thanks!)

MPlaqueTD_Club_Devaney_AD.jpg (137189 bytes)

Touchdown Club Plaque

Another identical plaque, though this one given during Bob Devaney's tenure as AD, some time between 1967 and 1993. No name or years associated with this one.

(photo and details courtesy Chad Maun - thanks!)

MPlaque1970NC_Newspaper.jpg (237918 bytes)

1970 National Champs Newspaper Plaque

Awesome collage of newspaper articles and clippings following the 1970 Orange Bowl victory that gave Coach Bob Devaney and the Cornhuskers their first National Championship. Appears to be from various papers, though the top right is from the Chicago Daily News, and includes a small strip in the lower left that is the final AP rankings.  Very nice and one of a kind!

(photo and details courtesy Dan Wagner - thanks!)

MPlaque1970NC.jpg (107836 bytes)

1970 National Champs Plaque

Very nice early NC plastic plaque put out by Dewey & Wilson Displays, Inc. of Lincoln.  Features the scores of all 11 regular season games, plus the Orange Bowl in the football at the bottom. Seven inches high, very nice plaque!

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

MPlaque70NC_Businessmen.jpg (44068 bytes)

1970 National Champions

Downtown Lincoln Businessmen

Very neat plaque that was put out by a group of Downtown Lincoln Businessmen following the 1970 National Championship.  Measures 13" by 10" on a walnut base. Lists the team roster and coaching staff in addition to the Orange Bowl score.  Great plaque!

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

MPlaque_1971Kinney_GOC.jpg (240076 bytes)

1971 Jeff Kinney, Game of the Century

Plaque commemorating Jeff Kinney's 171 yard rushing and 4 touchdowns in Nebraska's 35-31 win over Oklahoma in the Game of the Century. Measures 12" tall by 9" wide.

(photo and details courtesy Jeff Weise - thanks!)

MPlaque1971DevaneyOmahaPressClub.jpg (195548 bytes)

1971 Omaha Press Club Plaque presented to Bob Devaney

Very historic and unique plaque made in very limited quantities by Picture Plaque of Lincoln in 1971. This is the same company that made the 1970 and 1971 team photo plaques commemorating those NC seasons listed below.  I'll let the enlarged image speak for itself.

(photo and details courtesy Dan Wagner and Chad Maun - thanks!)

1970-1971 National Champs Plaque

The follow-on to the one above.  This one apparently came in two versions, as Dan Wagner sent the one on the left with a white base, Dan Vajgrt the one on the right with the wood base. Very nice plaques from a great era in Nebraska Cornhuskers football!

MPlaque1970-71ShieldWhite.jpg (80288 bytes)                 MPlaque1970-71ShieldWood.jpg (98693 bytes)

MPlaque1970-71NC.jpg (49646 bytes)

1970-1971 National Champs Plaque

Unique plaque commemorating the 1970-71 National Championships. The state outline and #1 are made of a molded plastic which gives it a really neat 3-D effect!  Measures 21" by 25", made by ABC Signs, Norfolk, NE.

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

MPlaque1970-71NC_long.jpg (38890 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs Plaque

Walnut base with sticker plaque commemorating the back to back National Championships by Coach Bob Devaney's teams. 8" by 26".

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

1970-71 Plaque

Featuring Harry Husker

Another nice Harry Husker memorabilia item. Harry took over as the official mascot in the early 1960s following the start of the Devaney era, replaced in the early 1970s at the start of the Osborne era.

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

MPlaque_1970sHarryMetal.jpg (239402 bytes)

Early 1970s Metal Harry Husker Sign

Another nice Harry Husker memorabilia item. I believe this one is from 1970 or 1971, possibly late 1960s.

(photo and details courtesy Tori Burnham - thanks!)

1970-71 National Champs Plaque

Featuring Harry Husker

Another nice plaque from the 70-71 National Championship seasons.  Approximately 22" x 29" and features the 70-71 season results with Harry Husker framing the schedules.

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

MPlaque1970-71NC_gold.jpg (101757 bytes)

1970 - 1971 National Champs Gold Rimmed Plaque

This is the same small plate found on the plaque above commemorating the back to back 1970 and 1971 National Championships won in the 1971 and 1972 Orange Bowls.  This one is adapted to hang on its own instead of on a plaque.  Measures about 4" tall by 14" long.

(photo and details courtesy Chad Maun - thanks!)

MPlaque7071NC.jpg (57055 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs Booster Plaque

A little blurry, but still looks great.  This is a 1970-1971 National Champions plaque w/inset, made by Lyle Garvin, owner of Wayne Sporting Goods and GEC Manufacturing Wayne, NE. It is not one of a kind, but there aren't that many hanging around. Measures 13" x 10".

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

(Info on Lyle Garvin submitted by his daughter, Joanie, of Spokane, WA)

MPlaque70-71_HelmetSilver.jpg (129113 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs Booster Plaque

Another Garvin plaque similar to the one above. This one features plain numbers "70" and "71" and a black velvet background outlined in red. Measures 13" x 10".

(photo and details courtesy Chad Maun - thanks!)

(Info on Lyle Garvin submitted by his daughter, Joanie, of Spokane, WA)

MPlaque70-71_Helmet.jpg (145296 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs Booster Plaque

One more Garvin plaque. This one features a miniature replica helmet over a small "1st Place" trophy topper. Measures 13" x 10".

(photo and details courtesy Chad Maun - thanks!)

(Info on Lyle Garvin submitted by his daughter, Joanie, of Spokane, WA)

1970-71 National Champs Booster Plaque

This is a nice piece of memorabilia from the 70's.  It is a plaque that was originally issued to boosters to commemorate the 1970 National Championship, as inscribed in the original placard affixed to the velvet.  They issued the same plaque with a different placard (the loose one in the lower-left corner) the following year.

(photo courtesy of Brad Staton of Cozad, details furnished by Bob Ihrig of Lincoln)

MPlaque_1970-71Helmet.jpg (107782 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs Plaque

Yet another unique example of a plaque commemorating NU and Coach Bob Devaney's back to back 1970 and 1971 National Championships.  Note the older 1950s-early 1960s style helmet shell used to make this version.  Nebraska didn't actually have a white helmet with the N on the side using this style of helmet.

MPlaque1971NCround.jpg (83438 bytes)

1971 National Championship Plaque

This is a nice piece of memorabilia from the 70's.  It is 12" in diameter, very unique due to its round shape instead of rectangular or square.

(contributed anonymously)

1970-71 National Champs

Three more NC plaques for the 1970 and 1971 back-to-back National Championships.  Great colors and details on these plaques.  Made by Picture Plaques of Lincoln.

(photos from Dave Auch of Omaha)

Another 19070-71 NC photo plaque in the standard rectangular shape.

(photo and details courtesy Dave Brown - thanks!)

MPlaque71Devaney.jpg (88404 bytes)

1971 National Champs Plaque

Bob Devaney's

1971 #1, 9"x12" wood plaque.  This one came from Coach Bob Devaney's 1999 estate sale with COA.  This plaque hung in his office, most likely a one of a kind.

(photo and details courtesy an anonymous contributor - thanks!)

(photo and details courtesy Arnold Remington - thanks!)

MPlaque1960sHarryFingers.jpg (89823 bytes)

1973-75 Harry Husker "Fingers" Schedule Card Plaque

Not one to show off to the children!  This is a one of a kind custom made plaque featuring the back side of a tri-fold 1973, 1974, 1975 schedule card.  Walnut base with a clear plastic cover over a printed card.  Very unique!

(photo and details courtesy Arnold Remington - thanks!)

MPlaque1970sFinger.jpg (143255 bytes)

1970s "Finger" Plaque

Interesting plaque from the early to mid 70's based on the psychedelic helmet design in the left corner, though it could be early 1980s as the media guides still used that design through at least 1986.  It was made by The Regal Athletic Supply of Omaha. Stands 8" tall, 4" wide, embossed metal on a wood base.

thanks to Mark Gentile for the photo and info

MPlaque1970sFeltPlayer.jpg (174883 bytes)

1970s Football Helmet Coat Rack

Nice 1970s memorabilia item featuring a felt caricature of a Nebraska Cornhusker player on a walnut base.

thanks to Chad Maun for the photo

1970s Football Helmet Coat Rack

Nice kids' coat hanger featuring the Cornhusker helmet. I am guessing that it is from the late 1970s judging from the white face mask and Herbie, but may be from the 1980s. Nebraska wore gray face masks until switching to red face masks for the first time during the 1982 Orange Bowl against Clemson. It measures 12" wide by 18" high, made of wood.

thanks to Dave Brown for the photo

(photo and details courtesy Arnold Remington - thanks!)

MPlaque_1975FiestaBowl_JohnLee.jpg (113157 bytes)

1975 Fiesta Bowl - John Lee

1975 plaque from the 1975 Fiesta Bowl. Not certain of the origins of the plaque, whether each player received one or if John Lee was the outstanding defensive player for Nebraska.  He was not the Defensive Player of the Game, that award went to Larry Gordon of Arizona State, who won the game by a score of 17-14.

(photo and details courtesy Arnold Remington - thanks!)

MPlaque_1977Big8helmets.jpg (182046 bytes)

1976 Big Eight Conference Helmets Plaque

Best guess is that this is from the 1975 or 1976 season.  According to the Helmet Project, the ISU helmet was worn in the 1975-78 seasons.  The KU helmet was worn 1970-76.  The KU helmet was worn 1970-76. The CU helmet was worn through the end of 1978. The OSU helmet was worn 1973-79. The KSU was worn from 1975-78.  The Missouri helmet was worn 1971-77.  All had only minor stripe changes in this period. OU and NU are correct for a long range of years.  Made by Sport Light Products of Omaha (defunct).

(photo and details courtesy Arnold Remington - thanks!)

MPlaque_1977Big8helmets.jpg (83384 bytes)

1977 Big Eight Conference Helmets Plaque

This one is from the 1977 season as marked on the back.  According to the Helmet Project and contributor Dan Vajgrt, the KU helmet used was only worn in the 1977 and 1978 seasons.  The CU helmet was worn through the end of 1978, then changed for 1979.  The KSU is good for 1978, but they went to purple masks in 1979 (small detail). The Missouri helmet was last used with the "M" in this style in 1977. Interestingly, the OSU helmet did not have the center stripe as shown in this version.  Made by Sport Light Products of Omaha (defunct).

(photo and details courtesy Jayhawk Fan Dan Vajgrt - thanks!)

MPlaque_1979Big8helmets.jpg (148008 bytes)

1979 Big Eight Conference Helmets Plaque

Best guess is that this is from the 1979 season, or in preparation for the 1979 season.  According to the Helmet Project, the ISU helmet used was only worn in the 1979 season.  The KU helmet started its new version in 1979 as shown.  The CU helmet was worn through the end of 1978, then changed for 1979. The OSU version shown was last used in 1979. The KSU is good for 1978, but they went to purple masks in 1979 (small detail). The Missouri helmet debuted in this form in 1980.  OU and NU are correct for a long range of years.   Made by Sport Light Products of Omaha (defunct). (photo and details courtesy Chad Maun)

MPlaque_1980sHelmetCalendar.jpg (198188 bytes)

1980s Big Eight Conference Helmet Calendar Plaque

This is a neat helmet plaque commemorating the Big 8 Conference that also included a refillable calendar.  Overall dimensions are 11" wide by 14" tall. Below-right is a version with the 1980-1984 schedules, and another version customized with a soft photo frame or some enterprising owner altered it to fit their needs!  Made by Sport Light Products of Omaha (defunct).

MPlaque_1981MARCON.jpg (86358 bytes)

1981 MARCON Nebraska Herbie Plaque

The description in the words of the owner, Sean Kelly - great story!

"This was a plaque manufactured in 1981 by Marcon Inc. I know this because my parents and their friends made these in the garage. Marcon was a combination of Marion and Connie.  The plaques were too labor intensive and they could not keep up with their orders. There are not too many of these out there."
