1950's Ceramic Souvenir Mug

This is a great looking ceramic mug from the late 1950's. In the 1950's most of the memorabilia almost looked like SOUVENIR ITEMS - the type you see in souvenir shops across the country. Because these 1950's mugs were made with thin ceramics, not many have survived.  There is a handle and on the side it says, GO BIG RED. This mug stands 5 1/2 inches in height and is a great representation of memorabilia from the mid to late 1950's.

Not mine ... thanks to Bob Ihrig for the photo and description!

JAX Beer 1967 Sugar Bowl

Stein produced by Jax Beer for the '67 Sugar between Bob Devaney's Huskers and The Bear's Crimson Tide.  Alabama won 34-7.

(Thanks to Li Li, a Georgia Noles fan for the technical support to acquire the image!)

1969 Big 8 Co-Champs

Stein produced by Buntingware to commemorate the 1969 Big 8 Co-Champion Cornhuskers.  1969 was a pivotal season that bridged two consecutive 6-4 seasons to two consecutive National Championship seasons.  This stein was given to each player on the 1969 team, and only sold in limited quantity at the Nebraska Bookstore.  The front of this stein has a picture of Harry Husker - the official mascot of the Huskers from 1965 - 1972, with 1969 BIG EIGHT NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS CO-CHAMPIONS. On the back it states SUN BOAL CHAMPIONS and lists the schedule and final score of all the games of 1969.  6" tall.

Not mine, thanks to Bob Ihrig for the details.

Cer1960sHarryStein.jpg (186417 bytes)

1960s Early 1970s Harry Husker Stein

This is an awesome light weight ceramic stein featuring Harry Husker. Features great 3 dimensional relief of harry and the footballs along the bottom. No markings that show date or manufacturer. Measures about 6" tall.

Not in my collection.

Cer70No1.jpg (95307 bytes)

1970 Nebraska No. 1!

A great  Buntingware stein to commemorate the 1970 National Champion season.  Like all other items from the 1970 season, not many were produced as it was the first time for the Huskers to win the MNC, and definitely not expected.  6" tall.

Thanks to Chad Maun for letting me take the photo!

Cer7071NCmug_lg.jpg (31494 bytes)

1970-71 National Champs

Another great Buntingware stein to commemorate the 1970-71 back-to-back National Champion Cornhuskers.  Same basic design from the previous, with the addition of the "National Champs 1970 - 1971" added.   6" tall.

Not mine...

1960s, early 70's Harry Husker Stein

Again, definitely from the Devaney era.  No date on the stein, just Harry Husker proudly waving his "N" pennant.

Not mine.

Thanks to Dave Auch of Omaha for the photo.

CerHarry_GoBigRed_Stein.jpg (121515 bytes)

1970's Harry Husker Stein

Very nice, Harry Husker Go Big Red stein. Stands 7-3/4 inches tall.

Cer1970sHelmetMug.jpg (45579 bytes)

1970's Helmet Mug

Very nice, simple mug with the early red helmet logo from 1970 or 1971.  Many early 1970s items featured this red helmet logo.

Thanks to Chad Maun for the photo.

Cer70sSteinGoBigRed.jpg (66131 bytes)

1970 Go Big Red Stein

This is a very unique stein from the 1970 season. It used the unique red helmet with white block N, and even includes the chin strap, which is not common. Also features a small "Nebraska" above the laces on the football. It stands 6" tall.  The logos used are identical to the coffee mug below, a tea cup (still to come) and a music box football found here.  This line of souvenirs was put out prior to the 1970 season to usher in the new era of the single "N" helmet logo during the 1970 season.

Thanks to Brian Beverland of Omaha for the pic!

1970 Helmet Stein

This is a great stein from the 1970 season, before the National Championship!  1970 was the first year with the "N" on the side of the helmets, and the white N on red was almost adopted, except that it looked too similar to Oklahoma's OU helmets.  The red N on white was adopted instead.  Items were sold in 1970 with both color combinations, however.  5-3/4" tall.

Thanks to Bob Ihrig for the info!

Cer70HelmetStein2.jpg (75948 bytes)

1970 Helmet Stein

A second version of the 1970 stein, this one having a white stripe added to the top of the helmet. The helmet is canted backward, with a red facemask instead of grey.  Otherwise, same basic design.   5-3/4" tall.

Thanks to Chad Maun for letting me take the photo!

Cer70FalstaffChampsBlack.jpg (83570 bytes)

Cer70FalstaffChampsBlack2.jpg (79958 bytes)

Falstaff 1970 National Champs Stein - Black

There were three versions of this great stein.  This first is different in that the "Falstaff Beer" is printed in black above the "National Champions 1970" on the front.  The third version has a plain back without the season results.

Thanks to Chad Maun for the photo, Dan Wagner for the info!

Falstaff 1970 National Champs Stein - Red

Same as the previous, without the black "Falstaff Beer" on the front.

Cer71Mug.jpg (129671 bytes) Cer71Mug2.jpg (110051 bytes)
1970 - Nebraska is Number 1

University mug commemorating the 1970 National Championship season. It features the 1971 season schedule on one side, the Huskers' bowl record from the 1962 Gotham Bowl on up to the 1971 Orange Bowl on the other. The 1970 mugs are harder to find because there was less produced than after the 1971 National Championship season. The mug stands just over 6" tall, with a 1-1/2" recessed base, making it only 4-1/2" deep.

Matches the coffee mug found here

6-3/8" tall with 1/1/2" recessed base.

1970-71 Musical Husker Mug

This is a unique musical mug commemorating 70-71 NC seasons.  It is 8" tall and 3" wide at the mouth, 4" across the bottom.  When you wind it up, it plays "There Is No Place Like Nebraska."  It has a button on the bottom that stops it from playing when you set it down.

Not mine.

Thanks to Charlie Grady of Bellevue, NE for the scan and info.

1973 Season Go Big Red Mug

A very interesting example of some of the creative ways in which "Go Big Red" was being incorporated into the designs during the early 1970's.  This piece proudly hails the beginning of the '73 season in which the Huskers hoped to make it an unprecedented 3d National Championship in only four years, having finished 4th in the AP poll in 1972.  Unfortunately, losses to Missouri and Oklahoma, coupled with a tie with Oklahoma State, kept NU out of the national title hunt.  The Huskers finished 7th in the AP poll after defeating Texas in the Cotton Bowl to mark the end of Coach Osborne's first year as head coach.

Cer71NC_Stein1.jpg (59109 bytes)

Cer71NC_Stein2.jpg (82221 bytes)

1970's 1971 NC Stein

This one is a bit of a mystery, as it features Herbie Husker on the front, yet commemorates the 1971 NC.  Herbie didn't arrive on the scene to replace Harry Husker until the 1973 season (TO's first). May have been part of a commemorative line produced in the latter 1970s or even 1980s.

Thanks to Chad Maun of Omaha for the pic

1981 "N" Mug

May be a one-of-a-kind item, not sure.  This beauty is 5-1/2" tall and features 1/8" thick raised gold letters.  The bottom is inscribed by hand with "Bobby Fitch, 81." May be a one of a kind, not sure.  If anyone has information on this item, please contact me.

1980s Husker Player Stein

This novel item was made in China for Cooper & Clement, Inc. in the early 1980's, probably to represent Mike Rozier, though the shade is a little off.  There is also a complementary glass mug that features this stein in its design, listed here.

Nebraska Cornhusker Fan Mug

Bob Harness, former design artist for McCormick Distilleries, made these mugs in 1984, along with mugs for several other schools, including Oklahoma and Arkansas. Only 500 were made for each school.  This one is signed by Mr. Harness, it appears to be an authentic signature, not printed on.  See image here.

1991 Budweiser Nebraska Traditions Stein

Anheuser-Busch issued this great looking stein in 1991 to celebrate all of the great traditions of the state of Nebraska, not just football.  Seen on the stein are the Capital Building, Sandhill Cranes flying over sailboats that may be in Lake McConaughy, an ear of corn, Husker player, USAF bombers from the SAC Museum, Chimney Rock, Courthouse Rock, and the familiar windmill.  Great collectible for Nebraska, stein made in Germany.
